Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford, Connecticut has an example of Louis Potter’s bronze work. Signed and dated 1909, the bronze work is on the memorial for Horace Wells, discoverer of anesthesia. There is a photograph on our website, http://www.cedarhillfoundation.org. I can provide more details if you are interested.

I am interested in the medallion Potter made of ‘Abdu’l-Baha, when He was in America in 1912. Do you have any good photos of this medallion, which was no. 7 in the “Circle of Friends” medallions? It would have been made the year Potter died. I wonder who commissioned it, and if there are any left anywhere.

We own a print from his North African period. A famliy friend took the framed print from his wall and gave it to Mother for her wedding gift in 1950. Recently I took it to a framing business as I was certain it was suffering from acidic paper. It is suffering from more than that and is now in the hands of a paper conservator. I am on the fence about spending all that money to have it treated and just need some assurance that I’d do the right thing to have it taken care of!

My husband and I recently acquired what we are told is the original plaster of Earth Man, as we purchased Edgehill in Chatham NY which was the former Potter estate. We are interested in learning more about the works of this clearly talented artists, and note the similarity between his works and that of Winhold Reiss.

…lois would be my first cousin…her father hugh was my dads (Louis) brother. We visited lois a number of years ago when she lived in Marion. I remember at the time, I told her to bring the sculpture she had in the back yard inside as it was probably worth a lot of money…yes, Louis was your grandfathers uncle. My daughter Michaela created this web site as we felt this to be the best way to celebrate and further the “art” of Louis Potter. What is your e-mail address ?

Hello, my name is Pete Toigo, I’m Virginia and Grant’s neighbor on Locust Street in Chatham NY, I have a beautiful view of Earth Man. I believe Michael’s parents built my house, when I was a child Elizabeth Rockefeller Potter stopped by for a visit, and my mom saved her obit some years later. Louis DiGiovanni who grew up in the big house still has an original marble Moulding of Man statue that was in the barn when we were kids. And of course there are the two beautiful Potter busts at our wonderful library in Chatham. I recently was in Nassau NY and found Potter’s grave, beautiful inscription, anyways, thanks for preserving some of this important history. PT

Hey Michael, If you ever come to Chatham I’d love to meet you, first of all I have to say my house is not as perfectly restored as the big house, but I love it just the same. See if this matches your understanding of events, or makes any sense at all; I believe my house next to your grandparents’ was built for your parents in the late 20s, the depression happened, at some point your grandfather died leaving Alma S. Potter as owner, I have her signature on one of the papers connected to both houses, my house becomes a separate property after both houses go back to the bank, the first owners of this house separately being the Haywoods, who had been your grandmother’s tenants in this house by that time. I hope there isn’t anything painful about remembering the depression era events of your family, from your mother’s obit it looks like your family went on to thrive in New Jersey & Texas, 12 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, etc.. And if you have any photos of this house or other memories of things you parents said about it I’d love to see or hear them. Thanks, PT

…I was told that the house went back to the bank but the details you refer to is all new…thanks for the info…my mother Elizabeth, had a full and rewarding life leaving us at the age of 87. .. Give me your mailing address and I will send you some pictures of the house going back as early as the 1920’s.

Do you have the book about the Chatham library? If not email a mailing address and I’ll send you a copy, it has pictures of the two Louis Potter busts and some other interesting info. I should be in Chatham for most of 2015, I’m going away the week before July 4th, If you come for a visit the library would surely acknowledge you in some way if you like. Also, two people have photographed and transcribed Louis Potter’s headstone on Find A Grave, they both got details wrong, I’d like to go back there and carefully write down what it says, also there is a line written in Greek, I want to find out what it means. Thanks again, PT

There are extensive references to Louis Potter in James Britton’s diaries that are on line at the Smithsonian Archives of American Art. Britton was a fellow student of Potter’s at Charles Noel Flagg’s Connecticut Art Students League. What is the relationship between Nathan Potter and Louis? The bio on askart says Louis never married. Is that correct?

My mother, who is deceased many years ago, had a Louis Potter just as you have in your listings hanging for years. She had a friend in Mountain Lakes, NJ named Louis Potter so that could be some of the reason she purchased this art work, while at the same time liking it. We have had this now for years and I just started looking up information on some pieces. My print has No 8 and in your listings you have No 11. Would like to have any details that you could supply me with. We are downsizing so have to dispose of some art works and don’t want to let anything go that could be worthsomething. Do you have a website that might tell me value of this?
This has been fun looking into all the different artists. By the way, my parents friend Louis Potter was married to a woman who claimed to be a Rockafeller…her nickname was Rockie. Story was the family disowned her when she married Potter…….but who knows.
    Thanks martha

Our research (most of which is described in this web site) suggests that his prints may be worth $200. to $400 at best…his sculptures are much more valuable. My father is the Mtn. Lakes Louis son of Hugh, brother of the artist Louis Potter. My mothers father was Lewis Kirby Rockefeller who served in the US House of Representatives from 1938 to 1942…thus the nickname “Rocky.” Both of my parents were raised in Chatham, N.Y., Columbia County. How did your mother come to know my Dad ?

So exciting to come across this web-site.
I own 2 prints, no 10, Daughter in the Desert (yours listed Portrait #31) & no 14, Woman with Cane (yours listed as Portrait #16) from the Tunisian period. I bought them at Sotheby’s in the 1970s & love them. So great to learn a bit more about Potter, I have been curious about him!
    I do have 2 questions:
Are these prints a “limited edition”? I see that there are different numbers assigned to them, but am wondering how many might be “out there”.
    2. Can you tell me anything about these 2 portraits?
    Thanks for any info.

Most of the info we have on Louis is described in this web site. To the best on my knowledge they are limited. It has been passed down that his art work was done to support his travels. I must be honest, I don’t know what “hand tinted prints ” mean. Do you recall what you paid for your prints. It has been difficult while doing our research, to determine the value of his prints. Hope this has been helpful.

In 1965, I was given a wedding gift of a bronze book end (one, perhaps there were 2 originally?). It is signed on the back: Louis Potter 1911 and is of a monk at prayer reading a book (Bible?) and is 9 1/2 inches in height. The person who gave it to me was Mrs. Ledyard Cogswell of Albany NY. She and her husband were very interested in art and supportive of the Albany Institute of History and Art. Might she have known Louis Potter? I am not at all interested in parting with it but would be happy to send a picture if you are compiling information on his work.
