Michaela: my husband and I just bought Edgehill in Chatham New York which was sold to us as an estate originally belonging to Louis McClelland Potter. The plaster of Earth Man, in a grotto, came with the property ( I am told the bronze of Earth Man is in the Hartford CT Antheneum), so I guess we own a Potter piece. I am very interested in Potter’s painting, as we are friends of Winhold Reiss’s daughter-in-law who runs the Reiss Foundation. I am intrigued by the similarities in both artists painting/portrait style- and, more importantly, subjects . Winhold came to America (NY) in 1920 from Europe (Germany), so perhaps the young Winhold was familiar with Potter’s work. Any insight would be appreciated. As the owners of Edgehill, we are very interested in knowing more about Potter and his works, including knowing where it might be possible to view and possibly acquire his paintings or etchings. Regards, Virginia Henneberry-Hering.
